Adding to the list of cloud possibilities

I hope this post finds its targets...

At the last TAC? meeting we spoke at length about online computing/cloud computing/Software as Service options, such as Stoneware, MS Live Office, GoogleDocs...

Add one more to the list to investigate.  http://www.icloud.com/en/  It sounds like they're just getting their cloud somewhat off the ground (pun intended).  I haven't signed up for it, but it certainly sounds interesting, if they can pull off what they propose.

Windows XP graphing calculator

In the technology demonstrations at Oak Hill last night, one of the teachersat the Smartboard demo

indicated that she could really use a graphing calculator that they could display
on the Smartboard.  Microsoft has a very nice, simple graphing calculator,
as part of the Windows XP "PowerToys" available as a free download
from here.

(Unfortunately, it doesn't install on Vista, which probably menas it won't install on Windows 7 either, although it works fine if you can get it installed.  There's a simple workaround here.)

Course Management Committee Update 2.24.09

The attached document is an update of the discussion topics of the CM committee so far this year.  It also includes information on the current infrastructure and a listing of the classes that have been created at both the high school and middle school levels.

Newton North directory

We have an excellent first pass of a data download from the Ed Center. Arnold Sodder is working to organize the data so that we can contact families to verify data, gather email information, and create a better database structure going forward.

The www.NorthPTSO.org site is running in Drupal?. We are working to better organize the site. The new Newton North site seems to have a direct feed for North PTSO news.

The collaboration between the NPS? and PTSO has been developing. Teachers have identified two students who are interested in working with the PTSO for database development and Drupal models. PTSO is exploring the legal ramifications for supporting work study positions.

Dell Mini-Note Project-March 2009: Update 1

The Dell Mini-note laptop project is an extension of the TAC  1-1 learning project team during the 2007-2008 school year. Last April, the 1-1 learning project studied the effects of having one laptop per child in two out of three science 8th grade classrooms at Brown Middle School.  Two vendors (Apple and HP) graciously loaned enough laptops for each child to use during science class for 7 weeks. One classroom used MacBooks and the other used HP tablets.  The student outcomes of this pilot were very positive.  Students benefited in the following ways:

  • Improved student performance
  • Differentiated instruction
  • Improved student focus
  • Higher level of student understanding and motivation
  • Enhanced student-teacher communication
  • Improving technology skills

PTO Communications & Directories - Update for North PTSO Board

Today, Janet and I made a small presentation to the PTSO Board at Newton North. Our purpose was to update them specifically on what's happening with respect to the North PTSO website and directory. Our talk covered that and also the NPS? TAC? more generally. Here are the highlights.

NPS TAC 2008-2009 Projects

  • Learning (Lead: Shelley Chamberlain)
  • Learning Management (Lead: Missy Costello)
  • PTO Communications & Directory (Lead: Erik Britt-Webb)
  • Overall Communications (Lead: TBD)

PTO/PTSO Communications & Directory – Primary Goals

  • Improve information access and collaboration within each PTO through the use of common/shared infrastructure
  • Dramatically streamline and improve the sharing of calendar events and news items across the district by enabling district-wide (and multi-school) events/news to be shared in a structured way down to local school PTO websites (via content syndication) and vice-a-versa
  • Dramatically streamline and improve how PTO contact directory information is gathered, validated, published and maintained
    • For each PTO
    • Across PTOs for families with children in multiple schools
  • Make it easy and secure for appropriate school constituents to interact across a range of Newton school and PTO websites, using a single identity and authentication credentials (rather than having to maintain different ones for NorthPTSO.org, WardPTO.org, NPSTAC.org, etc.)

Pilot Projects

  • Being conducted simultaneously at www.NorthPTSO.org, www.WardPTO.org and www.NSPTAC.org.
  • Implemented local calendars that are slowly getting populated
  • On WardPTO.org, provide an archive of email blasts (coming soon to NorthPTSO)
  • Working feverishly on short-term online directory gathering process/tools, while long-term solution is ironed out
  • In the next couple of months, looking to tackle the challenge of receiving, editing and organizing content for the NorthPTSO and WardPTO email blasts

Help Needed

  • Graphic designer to improve look & feel of these websites
  • Technically-minded person who can help configure modules being used to power the functionality of these sites (using the Drupal?.org system, but little to no programming required)

Technology Purchase Standards for PTOs

FYI...

November 10, 2008

Dear PTO presidents,

It is hard to believe that I am in my third year as Director of Information Technology.  I am pleased to report that we now have a comprehensive three-year technology plan in place.  (See http://www.newton.k12.ma.us/Technology/techplanning/index.html).  Although none of the technology budget initiatives planned for year one got funded due to the override failure last year, we are still implementing parts of the plan that can be done with available resources. Suffice it to say, we could not move forward with replacing old outdated hardware without PTO help and generosity.

I also understand that PTOs want to be certain that their money is spent wisely. As part of our three-year plan, we have outlined guidelines describing the number of computers and peripherals that should be available at the schools in order for students to have “hands-on experience” using technology on a regular basis. (See Appendix A of the three-year tech plan, pages 43-44)

In addition we have a business practice of maintaining equipment standards across the district.  To maintain these standards it’s important that all PTO purchases be coordinated with the Instructional Technology Specialist or Library Teacher assigned to your building along with the Coordinator of Instructional Technology, Steve Silverman.  This coordination will ensure that purchases are aligned with district and state recommendations.

You may be wondering why we adopted this standard policy.  The school system owns and maintains 4,500 computers.  Our department provides the training for both instructional and administrative staff in the use of these computers as well as the integration with the curriculum.  In choosing computer models to purchase, we use the "total cost of ownership" approach.  There's more to the cost of a computer and related equipment than the purchase price! It must be integrated into our existing network, server, and software infrastructure and be maintained and supported through its useful life.  Given our limited staffing levels and the budget realities, we need to choose equipment models and configurations that offer proven reliability and consistent internal components.  This greatly improves our support efficiency by maintaining a common hardware and software platform that applies to instructional or administrative computers throughout the district.

In summary, even though the price tag or configuration of a computer may be modestly higher than some “special of the month,” our instructional technology standards are part of a much larger strategy that has been developed with careful planning and research in order to offer the highest value over the life of the computer.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.  And again our heartfelt thanks for all the support you give us to replace and maintain our IT equipment.

Sincerely,

Shelley B. Chamberlain

Survey on NPS system-wide security policies

The following message is being distributed through NPS? PTO newsletters. If you have a chance, I recommend that you take the survey too.

To: Newton PTOs

The School Committee has appointed a subcommittee to review system-wide security policies and to make recommendations to the School Committee on how to deal broadly with security issues. That subcommittee has prepared a draft policy and had discussions about how specific security measures then might be implemented. The School Committee is scheduled to vote on the policy in November. This survey is designed to seek community input on some of the areas under discussion. We hope to get a lot of survey responses from PTO members.

Advertising revenue for PTO Newsletters

Following on the topic of Online Payment Options, I was in another conversation about how to handle the large volume of requests to include community service advertisements in the PTO newsletters. It would be nice if there was a non-intrusive way for community service providers to advertise their services to families through the PTO newsletters AND at the same time, for the PTOs to make a little advertising revenue.

As I was documenting some findings for Online Payment Options, I also discovered the Paypal Node module. Module is designed specifically for taking online micro payments in order to post content to a website (which could then flow into the PTO newsletters). This sounds like a perfect solution for the allowing people to advertise in the school PTO newsletters, while the PTOs make a little coin off the advertisement.

Online Payment Options

Recently, I've been talking with some fellow PTO technologists about "best practices" in enabling PTOs to accept online payments. Several PTOs have Paypal buttons on their sites that take the visitor to a Paypal page where s/he can make a donation.I'd like to see some better options.

Assuming a PTO website is based on the Drupal? system (as North and Ward now are) here are a few Drupal-based modules that could be useful in the future.

The Ubercart related modules is probably much more than we need at this point. It supports the whole product catalog, in addition to payments. Might be good if we’re selling school apparel and accessories, but too much right now.

The e-Commerce related modules may be better fit. Less focus on managing a product catalog.

The fee and donation modules operate on the Simple Paypal Framework module. This could be the simplest way to collect online payments that is at least a little bit integrated into our site.

PTO Communication via Email Lists

Nearly every PTO communicates with their respective families via some kind of email lists. Several use Constant Contact, while others use Google Groups or other software/services.

Communication Goal: One of our goals as an NPS? TAC? is to provide a good set of tools that all PTOs can use, if they choose, to communicate with their families and teachers. The advantage to having multiple PTOs use the same tools/platform include: avoiding duplicate service fees and making it easy for parents to see the wide variety of school-related newsletters to which they could subscribe.  This way, a family with kids at Ward, Bigelow and North could not only subscribe to their respective newsletters from one page, but also subscribe to the School Committee newsletter and others.

Image Galleries for PTO sites

I’ve been working with the newsletter people at Ward PTO and North PTSO to setup PicasaWeb accounts for collecting images to use in their respective newsletters. I’ve been finding it difficult to USE the images one they’re in the albums. It’s just not as friendly as I had hoped.

So, I’ve been thinking about changing course and suggesting that they turn on the Image Gallery features native to their respective PTO websites. As an example, I have created a couple of image galleries on this site.

Announcing a New Book: Drupal in Education and E-Learning

I've interacted with the author of this book for the past year. I'm really excited to read the book when it comes out.You can see the post in the Education group on groups.drupal?.org at http://groups.drupal.org/node/14914

Bill Fitzgerald, of FunnyMonkey, has written Drupal for Education and E-learning, due out from Packt Publishing in late October. Targeted for Drupal 6, this book covers how to set up community sites to support interactive teaching and learning. This book gives an overview of the functionality of Drupal core, and then gives precise instructions on using CCK, Views 2, Organic Groups, and a range of other contributed modules to extend the functionality of your site.

An anthropological introduction to YouTube

I just discovered this fascinating 4:30 video, Web 2.0 ... The Machine is Us/ing Us  by Michael Wesch, Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Kansas State University. Similar to the Shift Happens video that many of us have watched as part of NPS Strategic Planning, this one is important because of the enormous cultural/social (anthropological?) trends that it points out and the implications for how we learn and relate to one another - both in and out of the classroom.

NPS Strategic Planning Teams

I've recently been discussing the structure of the Newton Public Schools Strategic Planning Teams with others. The focus has been to understand how the teams are structured and what kinds of collaboration activities are needed? This way, the virtual/online collaboration environment can augment the face-to-face collaboration by providing a place to capture, organize and share the content and activities.

New NNHS Library Website created with Joomla

05/14/2008 - 4:08pm
05/21/2008 - 4:08pm
Etc/GMT-5

Just wanted to share our new interactive library website (http://www.nnhs.net/library/).  The new website is the result of months of work and was built with Joomla?, an open source? content-management system similar to Drupal?.  We used an education template from www.joomlashack.com that includes nifty text-resizing buttons.

We were partly motivated by literacy studies that show teenagers, and particularly challenged readers, respond better to white space and 'non-cluttered' websites. The new site includes several univeral design features, blogs, polls, and many other Web 2.0? elements.  Some highlights:

•  Students (or anyone) can easily resize the text.  This will be helpful for the visually challenged.
•  Students and staff can register on the website.  Registering allows access to private content, including passwords to our databases.
•  Polls and a rating system for each webpage.
•  Save, print or e-mail each page.

We tried for a while to covert our old site with Drupal, but in the end we felt that Joomla offered more design flexibility, as we wanted to maintain some of the look and feel of the old site.  We've only tapped the surface of Joomla's potential and we're looking forward to adding new interactive features as they are needed to the library program.

Org Structures behind Chancery SMS

In the process of writing a blog post in the Drupal in Education group, I did a little research to answer my own curiosity about what organizations structures are behind Chancery SMS. Here's what I found out. Please let me know if there are any errors.

In the process of exploring a the Diigo site that I just found, which provides link sharing and group discussions around specific subject areas, I found three groups of particular interest:

School Portal Capabilities

In a previous post (NPS Portal Possibilities), I talked about the different kinds of portals that exist or may soon exist in the Newton Public Schools. And I gave a brief definition of what a portal is.

Now, I want to breakdown and further describe how we might segment the functionality of a school portal into a few, well-defined buckets. I've been thinking about it for Newton Public Schools, I put together the following three graphics to define four major components, in terms of their purpose, functionality and technology behind the scenes.

NPS Strategic Planning - Working Groups kicked off today

This evening I attended the first half of the kick-off meeting for the NPS? Strategic Planning Working Groups. It took place from 4-8 pm at the Oak Hill Library. At least 80 people attended--impressive turn out!

The purpose was to get members of the three working groups acquainted, grounded in some of a common vision, and to begin developing long-term goals, objectives and actions for each group.

Shift Happens

Just came across this video, entitled Shift Happens. See it also on YouTube.

It paints a rather shocking picture of how dramatically the competitive global workplace and need for not-yet-even-defined education will change in the next 5-10 years. Makes it impossible to deny the need for equally dramatic changes in the way education is delivered.

Here are some statistics from the video

China has more honors kids than the US has kids.
More Chinese kids took AP English than American students.

Improving Content Search

I've talked with several TAC? members recently about ways to improve the ability to search for content on this site.  I wanted to point out really cool Drupal? module I found recently called Faceted Search. There's a great example of it at the JEM - Joining Educational Mathematics Repository.

Essentially, the way it works is by allowing you to define multiple "facets" of "metadata", which means different ways of identifying content. For instance, a given post on this site can by identified by author, date created, content type (blog?, book page, event, etc.), tags/categories, and free text searching the content within the title or body. In the Repository example, they provide seven (7) different facets to apply in the Guided Search block. If you start by clicking on cmueller (22), the search will produce a result set with 22 postings. Note that now, there are fewer options in the other facets, not to mention that two of the facets have disappears completely. That's because those search facets are now based only on the 22 postings by cmueller.

PTO Calendar Integration

I've had conversations with a number of people about how we can integrate PTO calendars together. Hopefully, the idea is pretty simple. For starters, let's imagine how the PTO Council and individual School PTOs might be connected together.

As I've illustrated in this graphic, the PTO Council would be the source of all district-wide events, while each School PTO would be the source of its respective school events. Each School PTO calendar would also subscribe to the PTO Council calendar, so that people reading the School PTO calendar would see events for that school and/or district-wide events.

NPS Email Lists

Below is a draft list of all NPS?-related email lists that I've tracked down so far, with related websites. Please update as appropriate.

You can use this to sign-up for their email lists.

This also demonstrates how many different lists there are, being hosted in different places, and how many times we're paying duplicate fees to Constant Contact, simply because we have not "crossed the bridge" on managing lists for multiple schools/organizations through a consolidated account.

School Portal Communications

Communications is one of the most challenging aspects of any project. It is also one of the most important to get right. It is a cornerstone to understanding what customers experience, need and want and to managing their expectations throughout the lifecycle of a project.

This page will help us develop and execute our communications plan for the School Portal Project. It includes the four following sections:

Stakeholders - who are they, what do they experience, need, want, don't want?

  • Teachers - For this phase, especially those who have already expressed interest at NNHS, NSHS and Bigelow
  • Students - Especially NNHS, NSHS & Bigelow
  • Parents

Channels - what are the channels, or mechanisms, through which we can communicate with them?

Any input for meeting with Newton High School Principals

Hi fellow TAC?'ers and School Portalers,

On Monday night, I'm attending the NSF Fundraising Dinner: Today's Students - Tomorrow's Citizens, where NNHS & NSHS Principals Jennifer Price and Brian Salzer will be the featured speakers.  As I've noted before, this is a great opportunity to get their valuable perspective on things that we're trying to do through TAC.

For instance, I expect to explore subjects like:

  • What is their perceived goal/need for students to be tech-savvy, adept at using technology to do research, solve problems, communicate and build relationships, etc.?
  • What is their perceived goal/need improved use of technology in school curriculum and in collaboration/communication between teachers, students and parents?
  • How do we address the apparent fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) related to changing NPS? education practice, particularly with things like the School Portal?

Are there other questions or suggestions that I should keep in mind during this dinner meeting?

TAC site navigation... how can it be improved?

One of my frustrations with this site is the difficulty in finding things, and I've come up with a couple concrete suggestions for improvement.  I'm not sure if they can be implemented, but I'm hoping we can improve the navigation.

One thing is that it is unclear WHAT is on the site, and how to find things.

One major thing is that the site layout doesn't follow a common model.  By this I mean that people haven't seen things organized this way before, which makes it very hard to find stuff.  Consider Windows Explorer and/or Mac Finder.  They follow a common format.  Top level choices are listed vertically.  If if has a + sign (windows) or triangle (Mac), you know there are sub-folders.  Everything in the computer is accessible from these few highest choices.

Information about NPS Budget Override

I know the School Budget Override is one of the most politically and personally sensitive topics in our community, so I'm hesitatant to say anything about it. Chances are no matter what I say, it will be incomplete or even inaccurate, so let me state clearly that my intent with this post is NOT to lobby for or against the Override. Rather, I simply want to share a little of what I have heard through a couple of channels. Hopefully this will help others as they form their own opinions.

On February 27, I attended the Alderman's meeting on the Budget Override. I was there for most of the presentations (7-9pm), but couldn't stick around for the Q&A, which I hear went until midnight. If you haven't seen the material that Dr. Jeff Young (Superintendent) presented, you should take a look at the 2008 Override Information on the Newton PTO Council site. Using the School Department Budget Memorandum, Jeff did a great job of presenting the evolution of the NPS? budget from FY03 - FY09, with particular emphasis on comparing three versions of the 2009 budget:

School Portal Use Cases

One of the key goals of blogging is to share real information with a group of readers in a way that is more rapid than formally polished reports and marketing brochures. It makes the flow of information more personal and more fluid.

With that in mind, I plan to share excerpts of the findings and recommendations of the School Portal team's report which is currently being drafted. We're using the "collaborative book" feature of this Drupal?-based site and collecting all of our content in the book entitled School Portal Evaluation.

Web 2.0 and Schools

I have found two interesting resources. Please share examples of powerful ways you have seen the Read/Write Web used to support teaching and learning.

For those who don't, I'd like to provide this brief introduction to what the NPS TAC is and, more important to this article, the purpose of the NPSTAC.org web site.

About NPSTAC: As you can read on the About page, the Newton Public Schools Technology Advisory Committee (NPS TAC) was formed in November 2006 with the goal to provide a vehicle for community input and expertise into the development and implementation of an updated three-year technology plan for the schools (see plan
here). Learn more about Year One and Year Two objectives.

Need help improving npstac.org!

Hello fellow TACers,

I could really use some help improving the content orientation and performance of this npstac.org site.  Is there anyone out there interested in helping?

For instance, right now the site seems more oriented towards function--WHAT you can do on the site, like create events, groups, FAQs, etc.  I think it would be more useful if we could reorient it to focus on the important/hot content currently being developed on the site.

One person can't do this.  It needs multiple perspectives.  Please comment? if you're interested in helping.
