School Portal

Newton North directory

We have an excellent first pass of a data download from the Ed Center. Arnold Sodder is working to organize the data so that we can contact families to verify data, gather email information, and create a better database structure going forward.

The www.NorthPTSO.org site is running in Drupal?. We are working to better organize the site. The new Newton North site seems to have a direct feed for North PTSO news.

The collaboration between the NPS? and PTSO has been developing. Teachers have identified two students who are interested in working with the PTSO for database development and Drupal models. PTSO is exploring the legal ramifications for supporting work study positions.

School Portal Capabilities

In a previous post (NPS Portal Possibilities), I talked about the different kinds of portals that exist or may soon exist in the Newton Public Schools. And I gave a brief definition of what a portal is.

Now, I want to breakdown and further describe how we might segment the functionality of a school portal into a few, well-defined buckets. I've been thinking about it for Newton Public Schools, I put together the following three graphics to define four major components, in terms of their purpose, functionality and technology behind the scenes.

Let's Get School Portal Fired Up Again!

Hey Team!

It's been almost two weeks since our TAC? meeting, and things have been a bit quiet as a team. I know some of us have been doing somethings individually, I'd like to get the team organized again with our new focus and lay out our major action items and milestones for the next 2-3 months.

So, this coming week, who would be available to meet for about two hours? I'm thinking in person or via phone/webex -- depending on people's preference. Here are some time blocks that could work for me:

Tue: 12 - 10pm (i.e., afternoon or evening)

Wed: 5 - 10pm

Grades to stay offline

Newtonite - Volume 87, Issue 3 - Friday, March 7, 2008

BY MOLLY SILVERMAN

Students and parents will not find students’ grades online, said special education teacher Dianne Lochhead, a co-chair of the Streamlining Communications Committee. For now, teachers will be able to learn how to use a program to present assignments, curricula and handouts, but teachers “can use it at their discretion,” Lochhead said to the faculty Tuesday. At the meeting, the faculty focused on communication in the school and on a Student Showcase Thursday, April 17.

Posting grades daily on line has benefits, drawbacks -

On a voluntary basis, teachers might post grades on line every day using a
program called Edline? so students and parents can see them. The Streamlining
Communications Committee will be talking about possibilities in a faculty
meeting March 4. Meanwhile, members of the school community gave their views on
the pros and cons of this possible change in practice.

Faculty might put their grades, assignments on line

On a voluntary basis, individual faculty might decide to use a web-based
program, said special education teacher Dianne Lochhead, a co-chair of the
Streamlining Communications Committee.

With the program, called Edline?, they could “post assignments and grades and
help students stay on track,”she said. Students and parents could also
use the program to check out announcements, school news and upcoming events, she
said.

School Portal Communications

Communications is one of the most challenging aspects of any project. It is also one of the most important to get right. It is a cornerstone to understanding what customers experience, need and want and to managing their expectations throughout the lifecycle of a project.

This page will help us develop and execute our communications plan for the School Portal Project. It includes the four following sections:

Stakeholders - who are they, what do they experience, need, want, don't want?

  • Teachers - For this phase, especially those who have already expressed interest at NNHS, NSHS and Bigelow
  • Students - Especially NNHS, NSHS & Bigelow
  • Parents

Channels - what are the channels, or mechanisms, through which we can communicate with them?

k12planet evaluation

Attached is my k12planet evaluation. This seems like the right place to put it.

Note -- Although I was initially positive about using this as an interim solution, my final conclusion is that it's just not going to work very well. Skip to the Overall Conclusion section near the end if you want to get to the punch line, as my reasons for recommending against this solution aren't really captured well within the formal evaluation criteria.

School Portal -- Need to meet next week!

School Portal Team,

We need to meet next week to review our assessment of portal solutions and determine which, if any combinations we recommend. What times work best for you?

To get the date/time selection started, I propose Wednesday or Thursday evening.

On either of those dates, we could:

  • Meet at my home ~5:30, I can provide simple dinner
  • Meet at my home ~8:00
  • Meet by phone and WebEx ~8pm

Please let me know what works best/worst for you.  Thanks, E
