Technology survey for PTO Council

We are interested in distributing the attached survey to PTO Co-Presidents.
There are a number of ways we could administer the survey, which are captured here.
NNHS PTSO School Directory
Submitted by janetsville on Thu, 02/28/2008 - 5:00pm.
I'm thinking we should look into MySchoolDirectory.org as a possible solution for North next year.
Does anyone know anything about it?

Hi All,
Here is the latest version of the "story": School Portal Story v6 ebw.doc (MS Word format).
Since our 2/26 meeting, I've changed the Major Technology and Functional Requirements to be an Evaluation Approach, which includes Knockout Criteria, Teacher and IT Staff Evaluation Categories.
I'll follow-up with a template for individuals doing evaluations.

School Portal Meeting Minutes 02/26/2008
Submitted by cbf on Thu, 02/28/2008 - 11:09am.
Note to Team: Feel free to edit these as appropriate
In Attendance: Erik Britt-Webb (Lead), Janet Porcaro, Charles Frankston, Arnold Sodder, Bob Rainville, Lisa Cohen, Martin Owens (Ubuntu Rep), Matt Anderson
Discussion Summary
Important information about deadlines -- Matt Anderson informed the group that there is no longer a March 1 deadline for the portal decision, as the project has been scaled back somewhat in ambition. It seems the intention now is to launch a pilot portal at North this Fall, with a small group of teachers, rather than trying to go school-wide immediately.

Great meeting last night!
Submitted by janetsville on Wed, 02/27/2008 - 1:12pm.
It felt like we work building up some synergy and accomplished quite a bit. I suggest we continue on this positive tone by structuring our meetings even more tightly with a detailed agenda when possible. We also need to remember to encourage equal participation from all members particularly with new members coming into the group. The practice of using a "Parking Lot" for topics to be discussed at a later date is useful in keeping the meeting on track while not dropping any good ideas or discussion topics.
Finally, accountability. We all work better with accountability partners. Do we have deadlines for assignments taken on last night?
Do you plan to attend the 2/26 TAC meeting (4:30 - 6) and/or the Magic Hour demo (6-7)?

Wrentham Public Schools
Submitted by janetsville on Fri, 02/22/2008 - 3:52pm.
I have a friend who has 2 children in the Wrentham School System. They use a Portal called PowerSchool. http://www.powerschool.com/ Has anyone heard of this product. I was more impressed with their initial web site. They market themselves much more clearly than Edline?. I'd be curious about the differences.
My friend says they log in and can check grades daily and she loves it. Her daughter hates it because even though she gets all A's, sometimes she doesn't do her homework, and her Mom calls her on it.

Education -- an issue that affects everyone in some
way or another -- is an ideal candidate for discussions on the Web.
There, parents, students and teachers can ask questions under the cloak
of Internet anonymity, which enables conversations about personal
topics such as learning disabilities and teacher conflicts.

Pilot of 1-1 Learning Project-Stage 1
Submitted by Shelley_Chamberlain on Tue, 02/19/2008 - 4:49pm.
The 1-1 Learning Team and the Project-based learning team have joined forces to organize a pilot of 1-1 learning at the Brown Middle School, 8th grade science. We have just put out a request for demonstration units, enough for each child to use a wireless laptop during science class.
This will not be a "true" 1-1 pilot as each student will only use a laptop when in science class, but it will give us an idea about "just-in-time" use, since teachers will not have to "scramble" to get computers, either by signing up for a lab or mobile cart.
PC Evolution (ultraportables)

One of five trends written in the CoSN newletter. This can only help the 1-1 learning initiative.

Evolution of the PC Perhaps spurred by the increasing focus on the environment, there are several predictions on 2008 being the year of the evolving PC. PCs are expected to get smaller, more affordable, and use less energy, although not necessarily all in the same product. Begun by Apple in January with announcement of the Macbook Air -- "the world's thinnest notebook" -- 2008 may be the year the ultraportable becomes popular. Going hand-in-hand with this development is a similar increase expected in the use of flash drives, with one source predicting that each of the major PC vendors will release at least one flash drive-equipped laptop this year. The push to make cheaper PCs, which began with the One Laptop Per Child initiative and the introduction of the Asus Eee PC, may also move into the mainstream, with predictions that Apple and Dell will develop similar, low-cost PCs in 2008.
School Portal Use Cases
Submitted by Erik on Mon, 02/18/2008 - 8:39pm.
One of the key goals of blogging is to share real information with a group of readers in a way that is more rapid than formally polished reports and marketing brochures. It makes the flow of information more personal and more fluid.
With that in mind, I plan to share excerpts of the findings and recommendations of the School Portal team's report which is currently being drafted. We're using the "collaborative book" feature of this Drupal?-based site and collecting all of our content in the book entitled School Portal Evaluation.
